| About Project Light of Manatee, Inc. |
Project Light of Manatee, Inc. is a literacy center currently located in its own building on 1104 14th Street in Bradenton, Florida. It is a nonprofit organization that was founded to answer the educational needs of migrants and other poor in the area.
Learning to read and write English is the primary thrust, however other subjects such as Math, and GED preparation are also available. Some students have even asked for help in preparing for the citizenship test. Whenever possible the student receives individual instruction. However, occasionally due to a lack of volunteers, a tutor may have more than one student at a time. To enrich our curriculum, The Oxford Picture Dictionary and other adult ESL books are used. During the day classes are not held, per se; this is a drop-in center. The students come in to study on their schedule, not Project Light’s. This makes for a very flexible system that adapts to the time and energy of the student. Some students come in for several hours a day when they are not working, others come in for an hour or so before or after work. Some even come in when they are living locally, move on for a while and then return to resume their studies when they come back into town. Usually in these cases, a brief review gets them back where they were when they stopped. A file is maintained on each student’s progress so that any tutor can pick up where the last one left off. This works very well for the needs of the students.
The one-on-one tutoring is very beneficial for the student, and the flexibility of the program enables students to learn at their own speed. This flexibility and one-on-one tutoring is what distinguishes us from most of the other literacy programs in the area. |
