Bluegrass Railroad Museum
History and Highlights
The Bluegrass Railroad Museum was founded in 1976. Operations were moved to the present location at West Versailles in 1987 with the first excursion train run in 1988. Excursion trains are run each weekend from June through December. Events include special trains for Mother’s and Father’s day. Volunteers don costumes and portray characters for our Civil War reenactment, Halloween fright trip, and the very popular Santa Claus trains. Fun and enjoyment for kids of all ages!
The grounds are open every day and visitors can see railroad artifacts including antique track maintenance equipment and the sills from the first railroad in Kentucky, the Lexington & Ohio, built in 1834. Also on display are 70 year old passenger cars, 50 year old first generation diesel locomotives, and World War II munitions boxcars, many in operating condition.
The Museum is a non-profit all volunteer organization dedicated to preserve and display artifacts from the history of railroading of the central Kentucky area. Our service to the community includes offering train rides in authentic antique passenger cars through the rolling Kentucky countryside past scenic thoroughbred horse farms. The trip is nostalgic for some and a new and exciting experience for our younger riders.
The Museum needs the income from our excursion train to support our operating expenses such as fuel, insurance, and utilities. We depend upon memberships, donations and fund raising for our more pressing maintenance and restoration activities. Your use of this Marketplace will help and we thank you.
