About Mental Health Association in Niagara County, Inc.

The MHA Story

The Mental Health Association in Niagara County, Inc. (MHA) was established in 1964 by a citizens committee that studied the mental health needs in Niagara County. The mission of the MHA is to offer programs and services aimed at promoting mental health while advocating for individuals with mental illnesses and working towards dispelling commonly held misunderstandings regarding mental illnesses. This mission is accomplished through the following programs:

EDUCATIONAL SERVICES
• Workshops and seminars offered on topics related to mental health issues.
•Video and book lending libraries on a wide variety of subjects.
•Health fairs and community presentations conducted by the Director of Education.
•Informational pamphlets are available free of charge.

INFORMATION AND REFERRAL SERVICES
•The County-Wide Helpline is a 24 hour telephone information and referral service which provides data on hundreds of human service organizations.
•Help Books are disseminated with telephone numbers of local emergency and service agencies.

LEGAL ADVOCACY SERVICE
•Staff attorneys and paralegals represent mental health clients to obtain essential public benefits, gain necessary services, and protect their legal rights.

COMPEER NIAGARA/COMPEER FOR YOUTH
•A volunteer companionship program for adults and children who receive mental health services. The youth program also offers family support services.

IN-HOME RESPITE
•Provides in-home respite for families whose children are diagnosed as seriously emotionally disabled.

PEER ADVOCACY
•Provides information and advocacy training to mental health recipients, families, professionals, and the community, as well as outreach services. Peer linkage advocates are hospital based providing outreach and reassurance at the time of initial contact.

NIAGARA SELF-HELP CLEARINGHOUSE
•Information is provided with regard to starting support groups and the training of group leaders. A directory of support groups in Niagara County is made available to the public.

YOUTH BOOTH
•Youth Booth is an information and referral service for youth, parents, and professionals. Services are provided at the Lockport Mall, as well as local schools and parks.
